Job Purpose
The Technical Assistant supports the workshop team by assisting mechanics and technicians in carrying out servicing, repairs, and maintenance of trucks and related equipment. The role ensures that the workshop runs smoothly by providing hands-on technical support, maintaining tools and parts, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
Workshop Support
- Assist mechanics in routine truck servicing, maintenance, and repair tasks.
- Prepare tools, equipment, and parts required for each job.
- Ensure trucks are positioned correctly for maintenance work.
Technical Assistance
- Perform basic inspections (oil, coolant, brakes, tyres, lights, etc.) and report findings to senior technicians.
- Support in dismantling and reassembling vehicle parts under supervision.
- Conduct cleaning and preparation of truck parts before and after repairs.
Inventory & Tools
- Ensure proper care, cleaning, and storage of workshop tools and equipment.
- Assist with stock control of spares, lubricants, and consumables.
- Notify supervisors of shortages or damaged tools.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to workshop safety procedures, including PPE use and safe handling of tools and chemicals.
- Keep the work area clean, organized, and hazard-free.
- Support the implementation of company health, safety, and environmental standards.
Administrative & Reporting
- Record basic maintenance activities in job cards or workshop logs.
- Report any faults, accidents, or unusual findings to the supervisor.
- Assist in maintaining service records and compliance documentation.
Key Competencies
- Basic knowledge of heavy-duty truck mechanics and repair.
- Good understanding of workshop tools and equipment.
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
- Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision.
- Team player with good communication skills.
- Physically fit and able to handle manual work.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent technical qualification.
- Certificate/Diploma in Mechanical/Automotive studies (advantageous).
- At least 1 year of experience in a mechanical workshop environment (truck/heavy vehicle experience preferred).
- Basic computer literacy for workshop reporting (advantageous).
- Valid driver’s license (Code 10/14 is an added advantage).
Working Hours:
Monday to Friday: 07h30 – 12h30 & 13h30 – 17h30
Saturday: 07h30 – 12h30
Weekends or extended hours may be required on a rotation basis.
